OpenAI and Dell bring Codex to enterprise hybrid environments

OpenAI and Dell Technologies are working together to make Codex available in hybrid and on-premises enterprise environments. The integration is meant to help companies use Codex closer to their data, systems, and workflows, including Dell AI Data Platform and Dell AI Factory setups.

OpenAI and Dell bring Codex to enterprise hybrid environments

OpenAI and Dell Technologies are partnering to help enterprises run Codex in hybrid and on-premises environments, where many companies already keep critical data and internal systems. OpenAI said Codex is one of its fastest-growing enterprise products, with more than 4 million developers using it every week.

The companies said the goal is to place Codex closer to the business context that makes AI agents useful. That includes codebases, documentation, business systems, operational knowledge, and the workflows teams already use to get work done.

⚡ New to this?

This matters because companies often want AI tools to work with their internal data without moving everything into a public cloud. Hybrid and on-premises environments are setups where a business keeps some or all systems in its own data center while also using cloud services. For non-specialists, the key idea is that OpenAI and Dell are trying to make Codex fit into the way large companies already run IT.

If you build AI automation for enterprise users, plan for Codex-style agents to live inside the customer’s existing Dell or hybrid stack rather than outside it. Design your tools to work with governed internal data, on-prem APIs, and systems of record, because that is where enterprise buyers will want these agents connected. Also separate workflows into code tasks, reporting tasks, and business-process tasks so they can be deployed against different controls and permissions.

According to OpenAI, companies are already using Codex across software development tasks such as code review, test coverage, incident response, and reasoning across large repositories. The company also said Codex is expanding beyond coding and is being used by teams to gather context across tools, prepare reports, route product feedback, qualify leads, write follow-ups, and coordinate work across business systems.

The partnership centers on Dell infrastructure that many enterprises already use. OpenAI said Codex will connect with the Dell AI Data Platform, which businesses use to store, organize, and govern enterprise data on-premises.

That matters because on-premises means the systems run inside a company’s own infrastructure rather than entirely in a public cloud. Hybrid environments combine on-premises systems with cloud services, which is common in large organizations that need to balance security, control, and flexibility.

OpenAI and Dell also said they will explore how Codex can connect with the Dell AI Factory. Dell uses that platform to support AI workloads for customers. The companies said the exploration includes ways for Codex, ChatGPT Enterprise, and other API-based solutions to interface with AI Factory to prepare data, manage systems of record, run tests, and deploy AI applications integrated with a business’s hybrid or on-premises Dell infrastructure.

In a quote provided by Dell, Ihab Tarazi, senior vice president and CTO of the Infrastructure Solutions Group at Dell Technologies, said the collaboration combines Dell’s enterprise infrastructure with OpenAI’s models and agentic AI tools. He said the Dell AI Factory with OpenAI Codex will let enterprises deploy AI where their data already lives, within their premises, and offer a practical, secure path to deploying AI agents at scale.

OpenAI said the collaboration should give customers a more practical path to production by bringing Codex closer to enterprise data and systems, while preserving the controls large organizations need. The company said that should support more use cases across software development and knowledge work.

By connecting Codex to governed enterprise data in Dell environments, OpenAI said customers will be able to build, test, automate, analyze, and act with more of the context needed for production work. The company said the partnership is intended to help enterprises adopt Codex faster and expand it into more high-value workflows.
